How to set a Goal, Build a System for It and Achieve It

January 12th, 2008

Last week I watched a seminar VCD that talk about the ways to become whoever you want to be. In the first tape, the speaker shared with us how we should build a system and plan for our goal so we can achieve what we really want in our life. I have to agree with him that making a goal is the most important step for everything that we want to achieve.

In our life, we study, read, learn a lot of things. However, most of us never use the knowledge that we learned. Besides that we also make a lot of goals from time to time. However many people never achieve their goals. What are the reasons that caused all this?

According to the speaker, we fail to use the knowledge we learn and fail to achieve whatever we want to because we don’t have a good systems that guide us to do that. First, we need a system to transform the knowledge or skills that we learn become our habits and hence help us to achieve whatever we want to.

A Good Goal Should Have….

Before we start to do everything, let us set a goal. But before we start we must know how a good goal looks like:

  • It is clear because you know the plan that you going to use to achieve it.
  • It is countable because you define the condition of your success. For example, I set a goal to achieve financial freedom when each of my business and investments generate $10000 monthly passive income for me. “$10000” makes my goal countable.
  • It has time limitation. Add a time to your goal.
  • It is challenging because you set something that beyond your ability.
  • It is achievable although it is challenging. Not something is too challenging until we cannot achieve within the time.
  • Matching with your life’s value and purpose.
  • Support the goal of your group if you are working projects in a team with others.

The System - Goal Setting Sequence

The system that the speaker shared is how we can split and make our big goal to become small until we can take action everyday easily. If we can take action every day, we will build up the new habits that make us do something daily for our goals. In fact, habit is the main factor that determines whether we will success.

First let me show you the goal setting sequence that I learned. Below is the recommended goal setting sequence that you can follow:

  • Step 1: Define Goal/Purpose for your life
  • Step 2: Set 10 Years Goal (long term goal)
  • Step 3: Set 3-5 Years Goal (Medium term goal)
  • Step 4: Set 1-3 Years Goal (Short term goal)
  • Step 5: Set Yearly, Monthly, weekly and Daily Goal

As you can see, the sequence is quite simple. First, you define your goal or purpose for your life. You must clear what you want to achieve in your life. This will be a big goal for you. Then you split your goal into 10 years goal. After that you split again to a shorter goal until you set the yearly, monthly, weekly and daily goal. The yearly, monthly, weekly and daily goals are important as they will guide you towards your goal along your daily life. Besides that, they are also the main system that will make your goal becomes your new habits and believe.

For example, I want to achieve financial freedom at my age of 30(Medium term goal). I still have 5 more years to go. So I divide my goal to 2 sets of short term goals. For the first 3 years, I’m going to concentrate on income generating. What I want to do is building some businesses that will generate me passive income. My target is both online and offline businesses.  For the last 2 years, I will start and concentrate on investment and buy more assets that build the wealth to achieve financial freedom.

After that I divide my first set of short term goals again to for my yearly goal. So this year, my goals are free up more time for me from my offline business and increase my online income to $1000 per month. Then I divide my yearly goal into 12 stages as my monthly goal and I set 4 weekly goals for January. Each day, I will set a small goal to accomplish whatever I have planned for the week. With this process, I already make my goal become small and easy to achieve. Besides that I am also building some new habits such as reading, learning and writing everyday.

PS: Although you set and write down your goal now, however, you must revise your goal from time to time. We learn, discover and adapt new knowledge and skills every day. With this new information, we will find out the strength and weakness of our goal. So from here, you must change your goal accordingly. You are advised:

  • Revise your goal yearly to redefine your big goals such as your long term goal and medium term goal.
  • Revise your goal monthly to redefine your plans for your yearly goal.
  • Last but not least, revise your weekly goal to make a better action plan for your goal.

6 Steps to Think About Your Goal

As a conclusion, let me show you the 6 steps that you can follow to come out your goal if you are looking for one now:

  1. Understand your purpose, what you want and your value for life. This is a crucial step to understand you better. If you set a goal that is attacking your purpose and value for life, then possible you will suffer from it and you will live in an unhappy life. So choose a time, relax and think about what you really want in your life and also your purpose and value.
  2. SWOT. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. I also heard that successful people always know their SWOT and fully leverage on them to gain whatever they want to. So we must also follow the same step. Understand you strength and weakness is crucial. Once you know this, all you have to do is fully expose your strengths and reduce or change your weakness. Besides that you must also understand what are the opportunities that you have right now that will help you achieve your goal. Last but not least, try your best to eliminate the threats.
  3. Planning and Strategy.  You have your goal and you knew your SWOT. So it is time to make a plan or strategy to achieve your goal.
  4. Goal & Plan Reassessment. With the new information you gain along the journey, you have to reset and redefine both your goal and plan. Of course, redefine your goal is not asking you to give up. Instead you enhance or change your goal based on your experience so that you have a better and easy to achieve goal.
  5. Awards and Punish. Last but not least, set some awards and punishments for your plan.
